Harry Houdini claimed that he was born April 6, 1874 in Appleton, Wisconsin. In fact, he was born with the name Ehrich Weisz on March 24, 1874, in Budapest, Hungary. Ehrich's idol was the great French magician Robert-Houdin. When Ehrich started performing magic before small groups, he added an "i" to the end of his hero's name and called himself "Houdini." The "Harry" is most likely an American version of his childhood nickname Ehrie.
Harry Houdini (March 24, 1874 - October 31, 1926, born Erik Weisz later spelled Ehrich Weiss) was a Hungarian American magician and escapologist, stunt performer, actor and film producer. He decided to specialize in escapes. Handcuffed and wearing leg irons or police shackles, Houdini could free himself easily, even when locked in jail cells or under water. One of his great feats was to escape from a heavy wooden crate that was nailed shut and banded with steel before being submerged in a river or lake.
