The purpose was to produce a document to replace or modify the Articles of Confederation as the governing document for the recently established United States of America. The states decided that the Articles were unworkable and needed a fundamental "law of the land". The convention chose to discard the Articles and start from scratch.

The Constitutional Convention was an important event in US history. It was the beginning of the formation of the United States. It began in 1787 and ended in 1789. The importance of it cannot be over estimated. Because the American Articles of Confederation was too weak, a new plan and the resulting US Constitution established the American republic.
