Propaganda was not limited to WW1, it is used in any conflict whether military or civil. Propaganda is best described as official government communications to the public that are designed to influence opinion. The information may be true or false, but carefully selected for its effect

In any war, not just the WW1, propaganda is used to demoralize troops and citizens caught up in the war either fighting on the frontlines or frontline troop support. Propanganda is put out to by the controling government to give their troops an edge on winning the war. So far it hasn't worked in World War I, World War II, Korean Conflict, Desert Storm, War on Terror or the war in Iraq where USA troops were involved.

The left wing of the Democratic party and the big news media companies are, today, putting out an awful lot of propanganda to the effect we are loosing the war in Iraq and the war on terror, to demoralize US troops and force President Bush to pull the troops from Iraq so they can say he was the cause of the US losing the war over there. This propanganda is completely unfounded and untrue, in hopes of regaining complete control over the US government in 2008.

So far these far fetched propagandized stories have not had the effect the liberals in the US congress had hoped.

WW I required extraordinary sacrifices. It was a very big, ruthlessly fought, destructive war in which millions of people died and much property was lost; therefore people were not going to just automatically do what their governments asked of them, they had to be persuaded that the war was necessary and just.

The main purpose of propoganda in World War 1 was to encourage soldiers to join up and go and fight. It used pictures and bright words that would make the war seem appealing or make them feel guilty about staying behind. Nobody really understood how horrifying war was, so all of the young men believed that it was a good way to prove themselves as brave.

During World War One our country was made up of immigrants. It was divided and broken into pieces and support for sides. When America entered the war on April 6, 1917, the biggest worry was public unity. So on April, 13, 1917, President Wilson created the Committee on Public Information. They censored and limited "Damaging information," that might have induced support for the non-allies. Soon the company was combining advertising techniques with psychology to create all sorts of propaganda.
