∙ 10y agoThe Pont du Gard Bridge was built with limestone blocks up of to 6 tons which were cut with precision so that they fit together through friction, eliminating the need for using mortar. For the water conduit, the walls were in dressed stone (stone shaped by flaking) and the floor was in concrete. To make the surface even smoother so as to ensure no obstruction to the water low it was painted with olive oil and covered with a mix of, pork grease, the viscous juice of unripe figs and slaked lime (calcium hydroxide, mixed or 'slaked' with water).
The bridge was for the aqueduct which took water to the Roman colony of Nemausus (Nîmes) in southern France. The aqueduct brought water from the source of the river Eure near Ucetia (Uzes) 25 km (16 mi) form Nimes. It was built in the 1st century BC. The bridge crossed the river Gardon or Gard.
