The Eastern Roman Empire and its fall remain a reverberating facet to modern identity and conflict. One aspect still felt is the division between Catholicism and Eastern Orthodox. Another conflict and source of historical anguish is the Fall of Constantinople which ultimately gave rise to the partition of Turkey and Greece causing ethnic cleansing of Turks and Greeks (and creating another East to West fault line) who once lived peaceably together for millennia.
