Chicken pox has not been eradicated from the world as of 2013. However, there is a vaccine that has become popular in the past ten years to help prevent children from getting chicken pox. Once a person has had chicken pox they will most likely never get it again.

Chickenpox was first identified by the Persian physician, Muhammad ibn Zakariya ar-Razi 865-925.

The chickenpox virus was originally thought to be related to the much more dangerous smallpox virus, but in the early 1900s it was realized that it is not at all like smallpox. Chickenpox, or varicella, is a member of the herpesvirus family of virues. That means it is related to Epstein-Barr virus which causes mono, and herpesvirus which causes fever blisters and other things.

As far as I can tell (I'm looking at an introduction to the history of virology from 1978) the guys who first described the chickenpox virus were E. Paschen, 1919; EE Tyzzer, 1906; von Bokay 1909. In 1954 Weller discovered that chickenpox and shingles are caused by the same virus.

There is no known cure for chickenpox. A vaccine was invented in 1974 to prevent chickenpox, and medications were invented in the late 20th century to treat chickenpox and other viruses in the herpesvirus family. However, chickenpox is a virus that remains in your body for life and can cause shingles later. There is no viral "cure" that eliminates the virus, although your immune system clears chickenpox disease within one or two weeks.
