Matthew himself tells us that he was a publican, which means a taxman, (not a pub keeper) - Matthew 9:9, 10:3. I would also like to add that being a publican was considered a shameful thing in the culture of the day and for a good reason. So it is noteworthy, that only Matthew reveals that about himself, while Mark and Luke mention Matthew but say nothing about his occupation.

∙ 10y agoWe do not know what Mark's employment was, but we do know that he was not named among the original12 disciples of Jesus, although he certainly was a disciple in the sense of being a follower of Jesus.
