The Cape Of Good Hope was at first called The Cape Of Storms by the Portuguese explorer Bartholomew Diaz who found it, but sadly the king of Portugal wanted more traders to come to Africa so he renamed it The Cape Of Good Hope. sadly, though, most of the people (if not all) who came died to do the storms.

When it was fist discovered by the Portuguese they believed that the Cape had a great deal of potential as a sea route for trade in India and so named it the Cape of Good Hope

it marks a psychologically important point where one begins to travel Eastwards instead of Southwards, particularly in the early days of sailing ships and exploration

Because the King of Portugal knew where the African territory was finally turning towards east side and not anymore towards south - meaning that one particular point was considered as the crossing area between West and East Africa.

If they could cross it again, then there was a Good Hope of finally reaching India.
