It's about a lot of things, but the story primarily makes fun of some of the philosophies at the time (as seen by Pangloss and his ridiculous idea that this is the best of all possible worlds) and points out the hypocrisy in religious organizations at the time (like the Grand Inquisitor who owned Cunegonde, the friar who spent his money on prostitutes and the Baron who owned slaves)
