Please do not confuse the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising of April-May 1943 with the much larger Warsaw Uprising of August-October 1944 by the Polish resistance (Home Army).

In the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising (April-May, 1943) a small number of Jews still in the Warsaw Ghetto rose in rebellion against the Judenrat and the Nazis. Obviously, they did not stand a chance against the SS, but at least they went down fighting. The Nazis burned down every building in the ghetto.

The later Warsaw Uprising of 1944 was unrelated to the earlier ghetto uprising, though a handful of the 34 Jewish survivors of the ghetto uprising, such as Zivia Lubetkin, took part in both.

---

After the supression of the uprising the Warsaw Ghetto or part of it was turned into a concentration camp, but very little is known about that camp.

The Nazis had put over 500,000 Jews into the ghetto in Warsaw, though starvation killed thousands each month, the Nazis began transferring more than 5,000 Jews a day to rural labour camps. Word reached the ghetto in early 1943 that the destination was actually the gas chambers at Treblinka, the newly formed Jewish Fighting Organisation (ZOB) attacked the Nazis, killing 50 in four days of street fighting and causing the deportations to halt. Heinrich Himmler sent 2,000 SS men and army troops to clear the ghetto of its remaining Jews. For four weeks the ZOB and guerrillas fought with pistols and homemade bombs, destroying tanks and killing several hundred Nazis, until their ammunition ran out and the Nazis manage to take the ZOB headquarters bunker. Many of the surviving ZOB fighters took their own lives to avoid being captured. When the battle was over the SS chief declared "The Warsaw Ghetto is no more." During the 28 days of the uprising, more than 40,000 Jews were either killed or deported.

Warsaw Ghetto Uprising started April 19th 1943 and finished on May 16th 1943.

The Warsaw Ghetto was probably the most infamous ghetto during the Holocaust where Jewish prisoners were forced to live and work until they either died or were deported. The conditions were beyond horrible and starvation was rampant. Frequent liquidations occurred to either shoot all Jews living there on the spot or deport them to death camps to make room for new prisoners. It was basically impossible to escape the ghetto and the people living there were constantly guarded and harassed by the Nazis. For some, the Warsaw Ghetto gave people months to survive and eventually escape death but sadly for most, it was a holding place to delay inevitable death.

when the last batch of Jews left at the Warsaw ghetto discovered that those that were being deported to the east were not being sent to labor camps but to death camps. they resisted further deportations and resisted with arms; this after assassinating some key Jewish leaders cooperating with German forces.
