One should distinguish the doll from the character. the famous poet- and he was NOT a Cartoonist James Whitcomb Riley created both the characters Little Orphan Annie ( not the comic strip-which it inspired) and another poem charactr the Raggedy Man ( presumably a Happy-Go-Lucky bum like the mythical King of the Road) - the writer Johnny Gruelle created the characters Raggedy Ann and later her brother Raggedy Andy much later0 around l923. Gruelle, who was a journalist- witnessed a horrifying crime while one the job. the man reacted internally and turned to writing harmless and benign ( pro-kindness, non-violent) fantasy for kids. Raggedy Ann was the original character, the toys were made by Knickerbocker Toy Company for many years, they had the copyright. There are overtones of rejection and unwanted children- as two dolls evidentally marked for ( reject, do not circulate) miraculously escape from the toy factory into the outside world- this was in the cartoon. This character started, at least with humanoid characters the Blind love or wide-angle love angle later expanded on by Cabbage Patch kids. It is sick in a way as why can"t a doll be made as beautiful as arts allow- such as Barbie or one patterened after a famous Movie Actress. It is quite another thing to have the Pokey Little Puppy, Underdog, etc. Man is made in the image of God- and not the product of well, a junk man.
