Since the foundation of Rome, the neighborhood of the Vatican has always been the Vatican. It gets its name from the hill upon which it is built - the Mons Vaticanus. Later in history it became the headquarters of the Catholic Church and, in 1929, it became an independent country.

Before there was any construction in the current site of the Vatican, it was a swamp. Under the Roman Empire, many villas were constructed there, after Agrippina the Elder (14 BC – 18 October AD 33) drained the area and laid out her gardens in the early 1st century AD. In AD 40.

When was the vaticon built?

The Vatican site was once the site of Caligula's Circus Maximus[later finished by Nero]. The obelisk in the centre of St Peters Square is its only visible remnant surviving today. Tradition holds that this is the same site where St Peter was crucified, and later buried. In 326 the Basilica of St Peter was built, then in the 5th century a palace was constructed near the Basilica by Pope Symmachus. This was the start of the collection of buildings that make up Vatican City.
