1999 was a very interesting time in fashion. Much of it was about tech, but not how you know it today. On the brink of Y2k, and not knowing what was going to happen next, designs reflected protection from a potentially hostile apocalyptic world. Many designer featured clothing with a futuristic spin, either through tech fabrications, multi-purpose design and man made fabrics.
There were a lot of zippers, toggles, black, hoods and clothing that transformed into something else. 1999 was one of the first years that the industry saw heat sensitive clothing and other nano-technologies presented in fashion. Military was also very popular, as was minimalism. Fashion was very different than it is now with excessive accessorizing, layering and color. In 1999 there was also a lot of androgyny and a 1970's glam rock revival. Popular labers were Prada Sport and Jill Sander.
