Ella Fitzgerald was born to unmarried parents, and before she was a year old her father William Fitzgerald, a wagon driver, left the family. When Ella was 15 her mother Temperence "Tempie" Williams died in 1932 in a car crash, and soon afterwards Ella moved out of her stepfather's home.
Ella had heart surgery they found out she had diabetes. Because of the disease it left her blind and she had both legs amputated.
