Naturally people like the benefits of living in a democracy that has rule of law permitting one to prosper in freedom and freedom from ignorance. People gravitate towards freedom and prosperity and away from countries that are corrupt and where there is no rule of law to protect the everyday citizen from tyrannical government or criminal mobs and / or genocide. Doesn't apply to everyone of course...there are major religious political movements in the world that despise democracy for the freedoms it provides. Some might call that ignorance, but save your breath trying to convince the backward thinking, they would rather kill you than be seen speaking with you.

An increasing amount of Irish or mainly European immigrants migrated into the United States in the midst of the mid 19th century while later on, economic instability on other nations led to the idolization of the U.S as the land of economic opportunities and prosperity that eventually led to an increase of more diverse ethnic groups or ethnicity. Financially, these diverse immigrants were highly discriminated upon and were forced to either take low wage jobs white Americans wouldn't take or had to start businesses themselves mainly in restaurants or laundromats (Chinese immigrants). Mainly, in the late 1800s, people from Russia, China, Japan, Greece, Italy, and etc came to America, not just Western Europeans.
