Katherine Lee Bates went to the top of Pike's Peak and inspired her to write the song "America the Beautiful." Colorado became an official state in 1876, which was the year of America's 100th birthday, otherwise known as Centennial (hence the nickname The Centennial State). During the world-wide tuberculosis problem in the late 1800's, many people moved to Colorado, especially the city of Manitou Springs, due to the city's two dozen mineral springs

Humans have lived in Colorado for more than 13,000 years. It was widely settled by Native Americans who were then widely driven out when Spanish and American settlers sought to expand their territories. It experienced a significant gold rush in the 1850s, became an American territory in 1861, and saw a war that eventually resulted in the expulsion of native tribes in 1865. It then became a state in 1875. Since then, it has been the vacation destination for many seeking sun and skiing. More recently, it has also seen two of the most significant mass shootings in US history, the 1999 Columbine High School massacre and the 2012 Aurora shooting.
