Along with other Afro American civil rights activist, MARTIN LUTHER LING, Malcolm X etc. Jesse Jackson Sr. is a modern day activists and founder of The rainbow push coalition. This National organization works with individuals regardless of race who's civil rights have been violated. Based out of Chicago IL, The Rainbow Push coalition is the Nations Largest, NON Profit organization who actions and resources has evolved into the nations leading civil rights movements.
Jesse Jackson has been involved with the historical struggle of African Americans achieving equality from some of it's earliest days. He was a contemporary of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
He went on from there to have a life of many diverse causes and careers, but all pertaining to the empowerment and equality of African Americans. He aided in the founding of Operation Push and the Rainbow Coalition, later merged.
He was a candidate for the Democratic nomination twice in the eighties - which it should be noted helped pave the way for President Obama's later victory in 2008.
He has been the "shadow senator" for Washington, D.C., highlighting the fact that in an unusual Constitutional slip up, the issue of how the residents of that city are represented has never fully been addressed.
He has aided in the release of hostages and P.O.W.s on many occassions, often being able to talk with those unfriendly to the U.S., like Slobodon Milosevic, Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez.
He has had his detractors, and suffered no small share of scandals, accusations of self-aggrandizement and even anti-semitism.
But none can doubt that he hasn't been an integral part of the struggle for the rights of African Americans, and that America is at least that much more racially tolerant because of his efforts. He cried at President Obama's victory rally, and many took that to be tears of joy at the achievement of his own life long dream - not that he be President, but that any African American be President.
He thus lived to see what his life had made possible.
