Hitler's strategy was a complex and ever changing plan, subject to his whims as much as to his generals' advice.

Hitler didn't believe that France and Great Britain would go to war over Poland. Once the war was on, Germany attempted to find a peace with France and Great Britain but failed. Germany then embarked on a series of operations to create security in the west. First Norway was invaded to preserve iron ore shipments. Then the conquest of France in 1940. Hitler and Germany wanted revenge for the losses of World War I and the defeat of France was part of the plan. After the Fall of France again Germany tried to deal with Great Britain. The Brits would not budge. The Battle of Britain was a mistake that cost Germany much of its air power. The German believed that with France subdued, the British were less of a threat. The Germans sent some troops to back up Italy in North Africa and began a massive effort to build a huge submarine fleet to destroy the British merchant fleet. The Germans planned to Invade Russia in early 1941, but were forced to delay in order to deal with Yugoslavia and Greece. Italy's mistakes in North Africa and in Greece cost Germany Men and time. By the time of invasion of Russia in June 1941 the German Air Force had still not rebuilt itself.

The question was why did the Germans invade Russia. Germany's main goal in the war was living space for its people. Hitler saw the vast Soviet Union as a perfect place to settle the new German people he was breeding.

The German military believed in fast campaigns and hoped to avoid the vast killing fields of World War I. Quick fast wars were cheaper. The major features of Hitler's strategy were fast conquests, defeating the western powers and a huge land grab from the Soviet Union. Given time, Hitler believed that his Fortress Europa could resist any attempts from the outside to dislodge German occupation. He failed because he could not conquer Russia, which would have provided immense resources. And because the Allies benefitted greatly from the entrance of the US into the war in December, 1941.
