Some Pierce quotes. I don't know which is the most famous or most important.

A Republic without parties is a complete anomaly. The histories of all popular governments show absurd is the idea of their attempting to exist without parties.

Frequently the more trifling the subject, the more animated and protracted the discussion.

You have summoned me in my weakness. You must sustain me by your strength.

The stars upon your banner have become nearly threefold their original number; your densely populated possessions skirt the shores of the two great oceans.

The storm of frenzy and faction must inevitably dash itself in vain against the unshaken rock of the Constitution.

With the Union my best and dearest earthly hopes are entwined.

The only important plank in the Democratic platform of 1852 was a pledge to adheres to the provisions of the Compromise of 1850 . The Whigs promised the same thing, so the election hinged on the leadership abilities of the two candidates and speculation about the extent to which they would keep the campaign promise.

He believed in the federal union and the Constitution that made it possible. Concerning the slavery issue, he noted that the Constitution was a carefully engineered compromise worked out by the framers, some of whom were slave owners and some of whom objected to slavery. He was a Democrat in the spirit of Andrew Jackson and believed in the necessity of political parties and party loyalty.

Pierce wanted to end the division of the country over slavery and preserve the union. He wanted to make Cuba a US possession and generally enhance the influence of the United States in the world.
