Brigham Young was the 2nd prophet in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He is most accredited with leading the Mormons from their city of Nauvoo in Illinois across the plains into Utah, after the martyrdom of their first prophet Joseph Smith. He was also the governor of Salt Lake and began the school that would later become Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. He was born in Vermont on June 1st 1801. He later joined the Mormon church, and in 1840 served a mission to England.

Depends on one's perspective. Brigham Young was a very different personality from his predecessor and mentor, Joseph Smith, Jr. Joseph had a personality that was at times gentle and friendly, and at other times forceful and passionate, depending on the situation. Perfect, in other words, for building up a new church based on a restoration of ancient principles. In the wake of his death, however, the church was in need of someone who could take the lead without wavering from any of the principles that Joseph had introduced to the church. This leader also would be responsible for leading thousands of followers across the plains and the Rocky Mountains to the west in order to build up a community where the gospel could be lived without fear of mob interference. Such a man was Brigham Young.

In leadership style, Brigham was always said to be direct; he always spoke his mind, even if his opinions or teachings tended to rub some people the wrong way. Some people, like Joseph's wife, Emma, chose to remain in in the mid-west primarily because they didn't support Brigham Young as the new prophet. However, those who chose to remain with the main body of the church believed that the "mantle" of prophet had indeed fallen on him and were willing to follow him wherever the Lord may have directed.

Brigham had a genius for organization, and followed the same pattern that Jethro taught to Moses anciently in setting up captains of 10, 50, 100 and so on. This organization helped keep the Saints focused on their goal of settling in the western portion of the United States, as Joseph Smith had indicated prior to his death. After settling in the Salt Lake Valley, Brigham employed that same organization in colonizing many towns throughout Utah, Arizona, Idaho, Wyoming, California, and even northern Mexico. He was instrumental in establishing many cultural and educational institutions throughout these communities, and Brigham Young University today has three campuses in Utah, Idaho and Hawaii.

Brigham Young was one of the first Apostles ordained in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) in 1835. He was a friend to the Prophet Joseph Smith. When Joseph Smith was murdered, Brigham Young carried out Joseph's prophecy and lead the Mormons across the country to safety in the Rocky Mountains. There he was appointed as the second President of the Church. Brigham Young was the President of the Church from 1847 until his death in 1877, making him (by far) the longest serving President in the history of the Church. Because of his long years of leadership in the early years of the Church, as well as his organization and settlement of the Utah Territory, he has become very influential and well-known.
