Google rescue agencies in your area, or look it up in the phone book. If you are from Canada, we have the SPCA (society for the prevention of cruelty to animals) I don't see why they wouldn't let you volunteer as a dog walker or something. You won't likely be able to get anything at a vet's office or a doggie daycare or anything like that, but rescue agencies should let you help out, even if its just a small part.
You could volunteer at a shelter or you could pet-sit for people. Ask around! If you can't volunteer, you can always send animal food to shelters...

try the human society they have many animals there and they might even have some reptiles. you can do volunteer time there and get lots of experince. plus it just looks good when you volunteer.

ASPCA has a lot of volunteer work. So does Petsmart. If Michigan has those places that is. Or you can check out any local vet's clinic. That's what I did before I was able to get a job; volunteer work with animals.

for literature you could volunteer at the library to read to kids for fun, for animals you could volunteer at the local pound/animal rescue center but you could also/possibly volunteer at your local zoo, hoped i helped!
