Regular farm work done by hand before mechanisation:

Land preparation, ploughing and hoeing; planting new crops; applying fertiliser such as manure and lime; weeding and then harvesting; ditch digging and clearing; tending livestock. On the cotton plantations they operated the cotton gins to remove the seeds and packed it into bales.
