This is one of the most common types of phytoplankton in the oceans. They are eukaryotic algae which can either be unicellular or exist in filamentous or ribbon-shaped colonies. Since they are food producers towards the lower end of the food chain in the oceans, their behavior can often reflect changes in their environments.

Diatoms are microscopic plants (phytoplankton) found in oceans and lakes. Their cell wall is made of Silicawhich remain after the diatom dies. The skeletons of these creatures are found in only a few areas of the land. Lompoc (Lom - poke) is one area that the creatures are mined. One of the products in use today, mined in Lompoc, is called Diatomacious earth and is used in swimming pool filters. Different grades of this product are made for use around animals (horses). The product looks very much like flour when refined for use in filters. Diatomatious Earth can be harmful if inhaled much like asbestos and can cause the same symptoms as asbestos.

They are heterokont algae, found in both salt and fresh water. The name, meaning "cut across" derives from the shape of their silica shells which fit together like boxes with lids.

Who ever wrote this u there should know that diatoms are not plants, but protists!

I"m in a seventh grade microlgy class studying diatom and in class we learned that they turn energy from the sun into food, so they are producers that are eaten by other animals. When they are eaten they provide energy to these other animals that cannot produce energy for themselves, these animals are called consumers. (There are also decomposers that take the energy out of dead consumers and clean the earth.)

[1] Diatomics may refer to the study of elements that have only two molecules. Such molecules are ka diatomic. And they're characteristic of Earth's most common elements: carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen. [2] Diatomics may also refer to the study of diatoms. Diatoms are algal organisms that have a nucleus. The nucleus is the location of the organism's genetic material. Diatoms process 1/4 of the world's carbon, and 1/5 of oxygen. They may be found in fresh and salt water, and soil.
