Nattig is a festival that can be likened to The dead of the Dead and Samhain. It is a Sumerian festival that not only honers those we have lost but celebrates life.
There are myths, or stories that tell of one of the goddesses going down into the underworld. You can Google it if you are interested in that aspect of this tale.
During Nattig it is said that the dead come back to walk the Earth. Some people leave out alters with food and candles to feed and light the way for the lost loves. Incense can also be found on these alters. As with most cultures, fire is divine, smoke takes prayers and well wishes to the Gods.
There is no right or wrong way to set up your alter, or place of remembrance. As for me, personally, I think of it as flowers on a grave, crosses on the side of the road, The apple cut in half near my front door. Simple things are sometimes better then big extravagant shows. After all, I feel, it is the emotions you put into the act that means everything.
Although this is a festival for the dead it is also a time for life affirmation.
