There is not one specific best combination. Colors adjacent to each other on the color wheel (analgous colors) are always a good color palette to work with. Each artist has their own particular color schemes. Using opposite colors can create a stronger feeling in a work. Learn the rules and then you will be able to choose when to break them.

Brown --------------------------------- Mixing the purple with yellow at a 3:1 ratio will give you a gray which can be lightened by adding white. All palettes are not the same, however, so you have to experiment with the reds, blue, yellows and purples you have to see exactly what colors you get. There can be any number of colors in an analogous color scheme. The only requirement is that the colors be from the same area of the color wheel. If there are more than 3 or 4 colors, then the colors will be much closer together, and you would need a more detailed color wheel to see them all.

It depends on whether you are talking about colors of light (emission) or paint (absorption). The three primary colors of light are red, blue, and green. Mixed together, they make white. The three primary colors of paint are red, blue, and yellow. Mixed together, they make black.
