While virtually everyone may tell a lie at times, for various practical reasons, a pathological liar is a mentally ill person who feels compelled to lie even when the lies do not serve any useful purpose. Such people also may base their entire strategy of survival upon an endless series of lies. Pathological liars typically appear to be very sincere when they are lying, and may be very deceptive. They feel no embarrassment about what they do.
Pathological liars are those who tell lies at every given opportunity and it is a way of life for them. As such, pathological liars never tell the truth because they are incapable of doing so.
Context and aim are the keys to discerning the sociopathic liar from the pschotic liar from the plain old liar. Sociopaths will probably use lies which are compatible with their personality traits and ambitions- once which will, if believed, enhance listeners' opinion of the sociopath (i.e. grandiose lies), or ones which will allow them to scam the listener (i.e. manipulative lies).
So a sociopath may create a ficticious war record, to seem like a fearless hero in order to be respected. Or they may pretend to have experience in a line of work which is, in reality, entirely alien to them- a practical lie which was engineered to get them a job.
Psychotic liars will probably veer more toward the grandiose, but bizzare and unbelievable, lies- e.g. that they are God.
Normal (i.e. non-psychopathic and non-psychotic) liars probably lie either to advance their own progression in some way or because of feelings of inadequacy.
Pathological liars lies on a regular basis and is unable to control their lying despite of foreseeing inevitable negative consequences or ultimate disclosure of the lie.

No, typically pathological liars are not not aware of the fact that they are lying constantly. And, often times they believe their own lies. However, we can't mix pathological liars with diagnosed disorder with a person who lies to protect himself/herself.

Individuals may tend to do that in general - pathological liars really have no bearing on the situation. Where a pathological liar is concerned it totally depends on the individual themselves.
