CSMA/CD

CS = Carrier Sense - The network card checks to see if it is connected to a lan.

MA = Multiple Access - All devices connected to the lan can access it.

CD = Collision Detect - When more than one device sends information across the lan a collision occurs. When a collision is detected a random back-off timer is invoked. When the timer expires the pc will retry transmission.
