The space race was a stimulus for scientific research, since the problem of space travel, or landing on the moon, is basically a scientific and engineering problem. To a large degree, the advanced technology of the 21st century got its start in the space race.
There have been many technological improvements that came as result of the space race. Satellites are a technological improvement that came as a result.
The Space Race was a technology race in the 1950s and 1960s between the USA and the USSR to outdo the other in space-related advances. The most dramatic result of this was the first moon landing, in 1969, which effectively ended the race.

Both America and the USSR improved space and rocket technology. The Soviets got to space first, but America got to the moon first. America would've won if it was an actual race.
to develop satellite technology superior to Sputnik 1
The number one primary feature was a "hi-technology arms race." Such as landing a man on the moon, this was part of the space race. The space race was part of the ICBM race...Inter-Continental Ballistic Missiles (with atomic warheads).
The space race caused many positive and negative effects on the world and the future of world events. Just look at the technology that emerged from the race to put man on the moon: ie. velcro, freeze dried, micro wave technology, Cell phones, Satellite television, etc...
