The Liturgy of the Word and occurs in the first half of the Mass, it used to be called the Mass of the Catechumens, now it is the Liturgy of the Word. The Liturgy of the Word, proper, includes the three readings at Mass along with the homily which usually explains or expands upon the readings.

During the Liturgy of the Word there are 3 readings plus a psalm that is sung and the Gospel Acclamation.

The First Reading comes from a book of the Old Testament most of the time. Usually depending on your denomination (Anglican, Catholic, or High Church Lutheran), the First Reading will come from the Book of the Acts of the Apostles from the New Testsment. This is what is done in Catholicism. On some occasions the First Reading can be a passage from the Book of Revelation.

The Psalm is sung after the First Reading and before the Second. The Psalm is responsorial which means the congregation is invited in respond in singing the Psalm.

Next is the Second Reading from the New Testament which are most of the time a Letter from the Apostle Paul to a group of Christians at a specifed location in the Roman Empire. For example, the letter of Paul to the Corinthians is a letter sent to the Christian people of the small town called Corinth which is in Greece. Other times a reading from the letter of the Apostles Peter, John, Jude, or James can also be read.

Third is the Gospel Acclamation which is the joyous singing of "Alleluia" and followed by a verse. During Lent however, Alleluia is not song and another solemn acclamation is sung. One example is the "Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ, King of endless glory!"

And finally there is the Gospel which comes from the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John.

In some cases, the sermon by the priest, a deacon, or another minister might end the Liturgy of the Word.

Teh Liturgy- word-work- word- worship is divided into two parts in a typical Mass. The liturgy of the word has various introductory rites- and is based on the Word- The Bible- the peak is the Epistle, Gospel,, and Homily or Sermon which is normally based on the Gospel lesson. This is in effect the first (Act) OF THE MASS . The Liturgy of the Eucharist follows the collection ( which immediately follows the Sermon)- this is the build-up to the consecration, offerory- and Communion rite.

The Liturgy of the Word is important to us, because it prepares us for the sacrifice of the Mass (the Eucharist). Holy Communion is so important to us that we can not just receive it just like that. We must prepare ourselves for what we are about to receive, Jesus Christ
