Illustration,Illustration,Illustration. One of the most important things you have to learn in order to be a successful designer is knowing how to convey your ideas in a clean and clear way. If you are starting out without the experience i would suggest taking pattern making classes so you can better understand how garments are constructed. Your drawings have to makes since to the pattermaker that has to take that illustration and make a pattern for it and if you know how to make patterns before drawing your designs when it comes time to draw you will know what works and what dosnt. There are other classes that industry uses like CAD(computer-aided designs) which is patternmaking on a computer but i would suggest learning flat patternmaking before you do CAD. Fabrics and color are alsdo classes that should be taken if going to a fashion school. Sewing and construction are also key things you need to understand in order to a good designer. The List goes on but i would consider taking a patternmaking class if you are serious about joining the fashion industry.
