Utah is home to the most temples of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) with 16 (three of which are under construction as of July 2012).
Other states with a lot of temples are California (7 temples), Arizona (5 temples), Idaho (5 temples), Texas (4 temples), and Washington (3 temples). Most other states have one or two. 15 states do not yet have temples of their own.
Please note that Mormon Temples are different than churches/meetinghouses. Mormon Temples are only for special ceremonies, but meetinghouses are where regular Sunday worship is held. Utah has between 2,000 and 3,000 meetinghouses, each housing from 1 to 4 congregations. California and Idaho have the next highest numbers, with about 400-500 meetinghouses each.

Please note that a Temple is different than a Church or Meetinghouse, which hold regular congregation worship services. The states with the most congregations/church buildings are the same:
Utah has the most (approximately 4,400 congregations), followed by California (approximately 1,250 congregations), Idaho (1,000 congregations), Arizona (720 congregations), and Texas (450 congregations).

Washington has 3 Temples and 545 congregations.-California has a fair amount of Mormons as well, with 7 temples, 1,355 congregations, and more missions than any other state (19).-There are pockets with high Mormon concentrations in many other states, including Oregon, Wyoming, Missouri, Texas, New York, and Florida.

Why are the pyramid on top of the Mormon temples?
Most, but not all, temples and churches of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) have a steeple on top of or adjacent to the main building. This is not meant to resemble a pyramid in any way, it is in following a popular Christian tradition to have a steeple on religious buildings. The steeple is meant to draw the eye upward toward God and to identify that the building has a sacred purpose. No Mormon temple has a 'pyramid' on top, and the pyramid has no symbolic meaning in Mormonism. There is no set direction in which the Angel Moroni points. And in fact, as of 2013, eight Mormon Temples don't have any Angel Moroni statue at all. Eight additional temples have received a statue several years after their dedication to help identify them as Mormon Temples. On most temples, the angel statue faces east if possible. This is supposedly because Moroni is meant to be heralding or signaling the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, whom is often associated with the east in scripture; but this is more of a tradition than an official belief or practice. There are several temples where the angel faces another direction simply because of the direction of the building or the lot it was built on. On five temples (Seattle, Manilla Philippines, Taipei Taiwan, Spokane, and Nauvoo, Illinois), the angel faces due west because the temple faces west.
