Most stars produce a lot of light but inert stars while they produce light do not produce much heat. An inert star is a star that has begun to collapse because not enough heat is being generated by its nuclear core.

Brightness is a description of a stars luminosity as viewed from Earth.

A star can be very hot and large but be so far away that it's brightness is not very bright - dim.

A star can be quite cool but be close to Earth and it's brightness will be greater than one further away.

A white dwarf is the "cue" ball answer because it is very hot - initially - but very small, about the size of the Earth and thus relatively, is not very bright.

However, a white dwarf 100,000 km from the Earth would be very bright indeed, much greater than the Sun.

The light you see from stars is actually visible energy called solar energy. The part we see is the visible parts of that radiation.
