The sounds heard while measuring blood pressure in this way are called the Korotkoff sounds, and undergo 5 phases: # initial 'tapping' sound (cuff pressure = systolic pressure) # sounds increase in intensity # sounds at maximum intensity # sounds become muffled # sounds disappear
There are two main sounds related to heart ryhtym.
The first is called the S1 or Sound 1, and coloquially referred to as the "Lubb." It is the first sound of the heart beat and relates to the closing of the Atrioventricular Valves in the first part of the heart contraction.
The second sound is called the S2 or Sound 2, and is known commonly as the "Dupp." It is usually a sharper, louder sound and is related to the closing of the semilunar valves as blood is forced completely out of the heart.
Strange. Normaly when you hear thumping sounds its your heart beat and that can be due to high blood pressure.
When taking blood pressure, systolic pressure is the first distinct and rythmic sound heard.
