His first major TV role was in "I Spy", a campy sort of spinoff of the original James Bond movie. There was a variety show called "The Cosby Show", before the family comedy series of the same name.

After the retirement of The Cosby Show, there was a short-lived detective series (two seasons) called "The Cosby Mysteries".

Bill Cosby is notable for a great number of accomplishments, but perhaps the most significant was this one; he was the first black actor who generally did not play "black" roles. What I mean is, there was nothing in his characters that REQUIRED the character to be black. For example, in many of Sidney Poitier 's roles, such as in "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner?" or "They Call Me Mr. Tibbs", the blackness of the character was an essential element of the plot.

Cliff Huxtable was a doctor - who happened to be black. Alexander Scott was a secret agent - who happened to be black. In The Cosby Mysteries, the detective Guy Hanks was was a retired police detective who had won the lottery and retired on his winnings, but dabbled in crime fighting. And who _happened to be black_. Any of those roles could have been played by a white, or hispanic, or Asian actor. (Although, not as well!)

In NONE of those roles was the character's skin color an essential element of the show. Cosby was the first great character actor - who HAPPENED to be black.
