Depending on their level of functionality, explain as much as you can. These children need to learn coping skills. The first step to that is awareness. If they can self-regulate their symptoms, then they can self-motivate the solutions. For example, when my son has hyperness or focus issues, he needs to recognize it, then recall his behavior mod lessons and choose to either go off to a quiet spot or run outside to get his energy out, etc. He is high functioning autistic so he had to learn that spinning makes him more wound up so he needs to choose an alternative behavior for getting out this sensory craving. Just as an allergy child needs to know what will 'cause a reaction, a special needs child needs to know the obstacles to overcome them.

Special needs children should be told about their disability in an age-appropriate and honest manner. It is important to emphasize that disability is not a limitation or something to be ashamed of, but rather a unique aspect of their identity. They should also be taught that they are capable of achieving their goals with support and accommodations.

How to Make Parenting Decisions for Special Needs Children?

Although it can be difficult for parents of special needs children to come to terms with their children’s disabilities, a child will look to his or her parents for guidance regarding his or her condition through his or her development. In order for a child to be able to find a way to thrive in the world despite a physical or mental disability, a parent will need to make some decisions that will be extremely personal and difficult to make. Let’s take a detailed look at some of the most important decisions that parents of special needs children need to make. While there is a great deal of different types of resources and programs available to special needs children and their parents, the truth is that many experts on child development are unsure how beneficial exposing a young child to excessive treatment really is. Some of these programs are very effective at teaching special needs children different techniques to cope with their disability, but many programs have an unintentional effect of ostracizing special needs children from other children in their peer group. This is particularly the case in the public school system where traditional special needs children programs inhibit a young child’s ability to socialize with the rest of his or her schoolmates.Unless a special needs child is severely disabled or requires the assistance of a teacher for the developmentally disabled, every possible effort should be made to minimize the social impact of a child’s disability in his or her educational experience. Today’s generation of children have been exposed to a much more open minded society and have been taught by their parents and teachers to be accepting of others regardless of their physical and mental capabilities.Having the opportunity to socialize and interact with other children in a normal way is one of the best ways for special needs children not to get hung up on their disability and realize that society is willing to accept them for who they are. In fact, there is currently a movement driven by adults who were raised as special needs children that calls for educational and medical institutions to consider some disabilities simply as conditions rather than flaws or problems that can be treated or fixed.

Do you believe students with developemental disorders should be integrated in general classes with the students without devlopemental disabilities?

I am a special education teacher--I have been teaching now for 12 years. I have worked with a very wide range of children with disabilities. I believe there are many factors that should go into deciding if a child should be in a regular classroom. Factors such as; what is the students disability and how severe that disability is, does the student have the social skills that it takes to be in the general classroom and the type of regular classroom teacher will be with that child. Many regular classroom teacher deal very well with special needs students. But I have seen some who don't deal well with special needs children well. These teachers need to know how to modify to the needs of that students. If these students get with the wrong teachers then that hurts everyone in the classroom. It is not fair for the student with the disability, the teacher and the other children that are in the classroom. Each students needs to be evaluated and all these factors need to be taken into account. We do many different things where I teach. Some students are in a special education room all day--some are pulled out for special services for 50min-2 hrs and 3 hrs. Sometimes the special education teacher even goes into the general education room and works with the special needs child. We all need to remember that every child is different and learns at a different way and at different paces.
