Answer You batch your jobs in order of shipping dates to eliminate back logs of work not done. Work that is done is put in another place to await shipping. The old batch system worked very well when there was a steady flow of work not caught up in bottle necks where everything stopped moving. For the most part, there was plant layouts to consider allowing products to move on to other departments for assembly or inspection or shipping. It was up to the person who scheduled these jobs to know when the shipping dates were so the company involved wouldn't get fined for not shipping on time. Today with the use of computers, less things are shipped late, but man or woman still need to over-see the day to day functions of any company.
