George Washington, who had been a successful leader in the french and Indian wars, volunteered for the revolutionary war in 1775. John Adams nominated him to be the commander in chief, Washington was appointed to Major general (2 star general) and congress selected him as commander in chief, which was not yet the term for president, but was a term for supreme military commander.
