The religion was mostly Christianity, which is a faith based religion In the territory of the former Roman Empire in Europe, Christian (Catholic). In the territory of the former Byzantine Empire, Christian (Orthodox). In northern Europe, either Christian (Catholic) or pagan--and some parts were animistic (e.g. pre-Christian Finland). In the Islamic world, obviously Islam was the religion during the European Middle Ages (although this was a golden age for Islamic culture). Note that Spain and Portugal were Islamic during the Middle Ages. Later with the rise of the Ottoman Turks, Islam was also brought into Europe through the Balkans.

During the period of 476 to 1000 AD, which is the set of dates most commonly given for the Dark Ages, the predominant religion in Europe was Christianity. Islam became important in Spain, and pagan religions were still extant in northern and eastern Europe of this time. Judaism was practiced through much of Europe also.

Christianity was unified House- mainly Roman Catholicism. True, there were different religious orders among the Regular ( by the rules) clergy, but the basic Catholicism was standing united. There was a tendency for France to somewhat attempt to overpower Roman Catholicism with a Catholic Faith of its own- considering the many Saints France has produced, ( St. Louis, Joan of Arc, Ste. Catherine Laboure , Bernadette, etc. this sort of spiritual nationalism is not surprising.

What does religion in government offer its followers?

AnswerReligion in government can offer its followers priority in government decision-making for the teachings of the dominant religion over those of minority religions. This can result in injustice and even oppression. At the extreme, religion in government can even result in oppression of members of the dominant religion itself, as evidenced in Europe during the Middle Ages, and in Afghanistan under the Taliban.

What is the largest religion in the Middle Ages?

Christianity was the dominant religion in Europe during the middle ages, but was certainly not the only religion practiced in Europe, nor was Christianity a homogeneous body during the period. Christianity divided into the Western and Eastern Churches in the schism of 1054. There were also Muslims, Jews, and Pagans in Europe during the middle ages. Muslims had conquered the Iberian peninsula during the early 8th century and were not fully expelled by Christians until the end of the 15th century. Parts of Northern and Eastern Europe remained pagan until the 13th century. There were Jewish populations at various locations all throughout the middle ages as well, although they were always minority groups living within other societies.
