It was a declaration of independance from England. It was meant as a "we are separating from England" document to let the world know that America has become it's own nation and will govern itself.

They cited many injustices imposed by England and aritocrats in general. They did not want a king, they wanted a nation where the people could govern themselves and not be subject to the whims of one man or a royal family. Taxation without representation was the big one.
