Usually you will be given the opportunity to ask questions at the end of your interview. You should at least have a few prepared questions or, if you are not sure of any information given during the job interview, now is the time to ask. If you do not ask any questions the interviewer can think you are not as enthusiastic as other candidates who asked 3 or more questions.

By asking questions of the interviewer you get the opportunity to show that you are aware of the current industry situation. However, never ask more questions than you were asked.

When you ask questions you will start forming a relationship with your employer. It will also increase your interactivity and make you look interested in the company and in the job you're applying for.

If the interviewer has not touched on the subject of the salary or hourly wage you can expect, you can subtly ask at this time.

For example:

What is the going remuneration for the job? or What did you have in mind as a salary when you advertised the position? Just be careful and go with the flow. You don't want to ruin a good interview by asking a pointed question such as 'What are you going to pay me?'

It might seem to the interviewer that you are more interested in the dollar than in giving 100% to the job.

Believe it or not, the people you interview usually want you to be professional. Although it is easier to find out what a person is like in a regular conversation, most prospective employees have prepared to answer questions from you. If you do not ask any, or ask very few, they might think you don't take them seriously. If you have not done many interviews try asking some open ended questions like:

What would you view as your greatest assets?

What do you hope to gain by working with us?

How do you feel we would benefit most by hiring you?

It is also helpful to learn how long they want the job for. Although you may just assume they want a career, that might not be the case. If this is just a stop on the way to something else for them, you might consider that so that you don't hire them, only to have to hire someone else in a couple of months when they leave.

You should be able to ask the interviewer about anything that you want to know. Typically candidates will ask about things like

  • the training and development offered
  • employer expectations for the position you'll be working
  • prospects for promotion
  • how the company supports employees who want to complete college degree
  • about terms and conditions
  • company organisation

Just don't ask questions that show you haven't done your research such as 'how is the company performing financially?'

This is one of those questions people find tricky to answer at interview. You should try to go along armed with a question that shows you have researched the company or that you are well motivated and ambitious. So questions about the following are good

  • training and development offered
  • induction programme
  • prospects for promotion
  • how they are dealing with a challenge they are facing that you have researched
