The original oil fields in Canada (and in North America) were found in south western Ontario during the 19th century in places like Petrolia and Oil Springs.. Later disciveries were in Alberta and Saskatchewan. Oil is presentily being recovered from fields off the coast of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia.

Unconventional oil is also prominent in CAnada. Heavy oil recovered by SAGD is located in Northern Alberta, Bituminous Sands in Alberta and Saskatchewan, and shale oil in Quebec.
