When Joseph Smith was in his early teen years, there was a religious awakening in the area where he lived. Churches were fighting for members, and the people in the community became very religiously active. In Joseph's own family, some joined with the Presbyterians, some with the Methodists, and some with the Unitarians. Joseph was a very spiritual boy and wanted to join with one of the churches but didn't know which to choose, so he turned to The Bible for answers.
He opened to a passage in James 1:5 which says, "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God." The passage struck him harder than any other verse of scripture had before, so he decided to do as it said and ask of God. He went to the woods behind his home and began to pray to God to ask which church he should join. Mormons believe that God and Jesus Christ then physically appeared to him and told him that he should not join any of them, because they had all strayed from the truth. Over the next decade, Jesus Christ and other Biblical figures appeared to Joseph and gave him the instructions and authority to restore the original New Testament Christian Church to the earth. This church is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the 'Mormon' church).
