Empathy and conscience awareness. Try to make them understand how others feel and encourage them to place themselves in the other persons shoes so they can understand how other people feel, suffer and hurt. Make them aware of guilt also in small doses from a early age so they can then have the ability of self restraint and suffer a degree of pain for what they have done to others. Try to get them to lift themselves up by inflating their own ego from their own achievements rather than using other peoples vulnerabilities and weaknesses to boost it. I'm sure there are a milion other things that can help but these three things jump out at me right now
