It wasn't a philosopher, but was first spoken by Leonard Nimoy's Spock in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. However, philosopher Jeremy Bentham had a similar quote: "It is the greatest good to the greatest number of people which is the measure of right and wrong."

Why did J.K. Rowling originally want to call the first Harry Potter book Philosopher's Stone instead of Sorcerer's Stone?

J.K Rowling did call her first novel Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. She named it that because the Philosopher's Stone isn't something of her creation it is a legendary alchemical substance which she incorporated into her books, like many other things (mainly mythical creatures). The famous Alchemist, Nicholas Famel (who was a reason person) tried to find it for years. It is only named Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in America because the US publisher said that Sorcerer's sounded more exciting and American's would not understand what a Philosopher was. J.K Rowling has expressed regret at allowing the name change and said had she been in a better position financially and not desperate to have her book published she would have fought to keep it.
