The movie "The Hunt for Red October" is based on the 1981 Tom Clancy novel of the same title. It was this novel that propelled him to stardom in the novel world.

The information in the novel was such that the CIA had a "few questions" for Clancy; however, he was able to show and prove that all information he obtained for the book was from public sources and not classified ones. He was cleared of any wrongdoing.

The book and movie is about the Soviet / Russian Typhoon-class submarine Red October. Her CO, Captain Marko Ramius, has realized that the Red October is a first-strike weapon. Unwilling to be a part of ending the world, he has decided to defect to the United States, and hand over the boat as well. Only Ramius' officers know of the plan - his crew are not aware.

The book/movie was the first to show real-world Cold War tactics, weapons and strategies, and though many things aren't correct (I can't say which are right and which are wrong for several more years) Clancy's ability to deduce things from the information he gathered was uncanny. I remember reading his book on my first deployment and wondering how he could've obtained the information, even if some was incorrect.

What does it mean to dream of a red submarine?

Unless you have been watching "Hunt for Red October," the submarine in your dream represents your own unconscious mind, in the sense of going "deep" into your unconscious thoughts and feelings. The color red could simply refer to the Tom Clancy novel and the movie based on it, but might also represent deeply hidden anger or passion.

What is a crazy Ivan?

A "Crazy Ivan" is US Navy slang for a sudden, extreme turn by a submerged submarine. It was used to mean what a Soviet submarine captain did during the Cold War when he wanted to check if an American sub was following him. He would turn all the way in a circle (to port or starboard), using his sonar to check for the supposed "stalker" (American sub). Then he would go back to his regular course (if he didn't find them). This slang was explained in the 1990 action movie "The Hunt for Red October" based on the 1984 novel by Tom Clancy. A fun little tidbit for you: "Ivan" means "John" in Russian, so it's actually a "Crazy John".

How did they find the underwater Russian submarine in order to destroy it in Diamonds are Forever movie?

As far as I can remember, there was never an underwater Russian submarine in Diamonds Are Forever. The underwater Russian/Soviet submarine was destroyed after the USA Titan II missile base was blown up, and before the Chinese missile base was blown up. Your memory is not very good.

Is the movie the hunt for red october a true story and is the characters in the movie real?

It is loosely based on the the Soviet Baltic Fleet destroyer torozhevoy ("Sentry"). Do a little research and you'll find the historic account. Not like the Hunt for Red October, but like most Hollywood movies, literary license was taken for big box office purposes.EDIT: The movie The Hunt for Red October was actually based on the novel of same name, by Tom Clancy. It was the novel that was loosely based on the mutiny of Storozhevoy. When Clancy wrote the novel, it was widely believed that Storozhevoy was going to defect to the West, and he based his story on that assumption. It was not discovered until the end of the Cold War that the ship was not defecting, but actually attempting to spark a second Leninist revolution in Russia. The other major difference between the novel and the true story was who led the mutiny. On Storozhevoy, the mutiny was led by the political officer, Valery Sablin, while on Red October (Krazniy Oktyabr) it was led by the captain.
