The main character Goku learns it from his teacher, Master Roshi. Practitioners believed a fighter could become stronger if they increased the level of qi in their bodies. Chinese authors writing serialized Martial Arts fiction in the 20th-century were instrumental in popularizing characters who had the god-like ability to use their qi energy as projectile weapons. This literature most likely influenced Akira Toriyama, the creator of the Dragon Ball franchise.
