Walt Whitman's poetry was unique because he wrote in free verse. He didn't stick with the usual structure or even making sure his verses rhymed. Also, he didn't always speak about a hero in terms where they were elevated above the rest of the people. He was grounded in his writing and spoke about the common people and subjects they could easily relate to.

Walt Whitman wrote poems as a way to express his deep connection to the human experience and his belief in the interconnectedness of all people. His work often explored themes of democracy, individualism, and the beauty of the natural world. Whitman believed that poetry had the power to inspire and unite people, and he sought to capture the essence of America in his writing.

Self taught when we was little, off school at age 11, read a massive work of the world by himself! Worked as part time during Civil War secretly as a poet. Then later, he published his work using his own expenses.

His view of the human body as beautiful and worthy, as opposed to shameful and sinful, is one answer. He also saw all of America as an extension of himself and himself as an extension of the cosmos.

His compassion for soldiers (whom he nursed) who fought, were injured, and died in the Civil War is another thread that runs throughout his poetry.

His apparent homosexuality and passion for the bodies and beauty of other men also resonates through his work.

But Whitman's image of the human and the divine as one are everywhere in his poetry, and for me, that is the core of his work.
