Mary Shelley's Frankenstein originally had the subtitle: The Modern Prometheus. Prometheus was, according to Greek mythology, the titan who stole fire from Zeus and gave it to all of mankind. Mary Shelley, who most likely had read Greek Mythology and knew all about the recent advancement of electricity, used these two elements in her novel. Shelley replaced fire with electricity, and put her own spin on the Modern Prometheus. Prometheus is also a well known myth in the Latin language. In the Latin version the god, Prometheus creates the human form out of water and clay. This is a very applicable theme that goes with the Novel because Victor Frankenstein creates the monster in a similar way. Promethus parallels Victor almost exactly.

During their sea-shore walks and discussions, Mary, Wordsworth and Coleridge decided to write a horror creation each and see whose work would terrify the world most. Wordworth wrote the poem Stolen Boat, Coleridge wrote The Ryme Of The Ancient Mariner and Mary wrote the novel Frankenstein. Wordsworth was the least successful which he compensated for by writing The Leech-Gatherer later.

Between the 15th and 17th of June Lord Byron, Percy Shelley, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley and Dr. John Polidori stay at a villa by Lake Geneva. Quite possibly under the influence of laudanum, they declare they will each write a ghost story. From this meeting both the Vampire sub-genre and Science Fiction itself are created in English .
