There is no such thing as "Bosnian Austria". Bosnia used to be a territory controlled by the Austro-Hungarian Empire from 1878 until 1919. The language spoken in Bosnia under Austrian occupation was generally Serbo-Croatian, which is the language still spoken in Bosnia. (However, because of the politics in the Balkans, the language is currently called Bosnian, even though it is the same thing.) However, the Austrian rulers in Bosnia promulgated official business in German, sometimes with a translation into Serbo-Croatian for the locals to understand.

Official Languages: The primary official language of Austria-Hungary was High German. In some aspects of the government, due to the dual monarchy, the second official language was Hungarian.

Spoken Languages: While these languages did not have official status as national languages, there were a number of additional languages including: Czech, Italian, Moravian, Polish, Romani/Gypsy Romanian, Ruthenian Serbo-Croatian, Slovak, Slovene Ukrainian, and Yiddish. There were also foreigners living in the Austro-Hungarian Empire from other origins who spoke their particular languages.

The 1 official language of Austria is German.

Austrian German is spoken natively by 88.6% of the population. Standard Austrian German is used in education, media, and government, but in less formal situations, Austrians tend to use forms closer to or identical with the Bavarian and Alemannic dialects, traditionally spoken – but rarely written – in Austria.

Here are the minority languages of Austria (statistics are from 2001):

  1. Turkish (2.28%)
  2. Serbian (2.21%)
  3. Croatian (1.63%)
  4. English (0.73%)
  5. Hungarian (0.51%)
  6. Bosnian (0.43%)
  7. Polish (0.35%)
  8. Albanian (0.35%)
  9. Slovenian (0.31%)
  10. Czech (0.22%)
  11. Arabic (0.22%)
  12. Romanian (0.21%)
  13. Austrian Sign Language (ÖGS), spoken by about 10,000 people.

Austrian Sign Language shares some features with German Sign Language and Swiss-German Sign Language, but is not mutually intelligible with either.
