The silicon chip became available in the 1970's. Prior to that electronics were made from discrete transistors and components. Devices such as pocket calculators (c.72) and LED watches became available in c.1975 but were quickly superseded in the late 70's by the more energy efficient LCD displays. LCD displays for computers did not exist until the middle 1980's. Originally packaged in kits for self assembly, home computers started to be available, though they were very expensive and didn't really have a large market. It wasn't until around c.1977 that pre-built computers started to appear. Larger CRT televisions of up to 32" were available.
